Portugal - 5th safest country in the world

Portugal is the 5th safest country in the world, after Iceland, Denmark, Sweden and New Zealand.

The Global Peace Index, a study carried out by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), ranks the nations of the world according to their level of peacefulness, according to factors ranging from the number of homicides, the possession of weapons, terrorism and even public safety and domestic social violence.

This index (June 2016) includes 163 countries of which Portugal occupies 5th place among the world's safest countries, advancing six positions compared to last year's index (11th place in 2015).

Although the context is revealing increasingly insecure times, not only by the onset of the "terrorist attacks, as well as the persistent internal conflicts and greater political instability”, Europe remains the most pacific continent, when compared to other regions. The five countries occupying the last position wereSomalia, South Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria (in last position).

Being placed in fifth position on the Global Peace Index is reason enough to lift National pride, but add to that the fact you can count on around 300 hours of sunshine in a year (in the South), and one of the richest cuisines in the world, then is there any better place to live than Portugal?
